Serve
Music MinistryAltar Guild
The ministry of the Altar Guild is the quiet service of lay members to make the worship liturgically correct and beautiful. Our work goes largely unnoticed as it is a ministry behind the scenes.
Our responsibilities include the preparation and care of the altar for all church services (Sunday services, weddings, funerals and memorials, baptisms, and special services). It is our responsibility to care for all altar vestments, linens, communion vessels and candles, and to order and care for flowers for Sunday and special services.
Each Saturday a group meets at 9 am for about an hour. During that time we fill the communion cups with wine and the trays with wafers. All the candles are filled with oil, including the hanging eternal light. The pews are supplied with the appropriate cards, pencils sharpened and all trash is removed so that each service is prepared for the worshipper. In addition, before and after each communion service, a member of Altar Guild cleans up and/or sets out for the next service.
Over the years, we have been fortunate at Abiding Savior to have been blessed with many dedicated women who have served faithfully year after year. A few men have joined our ranks, along with the children who have come with their moms each week to help. Our 7th and 8th graders have also helped out during the week to fill the pews with cards.
The congregation has responded to our call for help in providing fresh flowers by your contributions on Flower Sunday in November. And we thank you so much. It greatly adds to the beauty of our worship.
We invite you to be part of this wonderful and historical ministry. We believe that during Jesus’ time there were those “behind the scene” people serving Him in this way also.
We invite you to join us and make new friends as you serve. This service opportunity provides a wonderful mother/daughter or mother/son – or husband/wife time – and we welcome any men who’d like to join us.
We’re divided into 6 groups so that each group serves twice a year, a month at a time. For example: January/July. One hour of service Saturday morning and then helping out at the service you attend. We especially need helpers at the middle and last services on Sunday morning. We do have two meetings during the year, usually in February to prepare for Easter and one in the Fall to prepare for Christmas. And, believe it or not, we conduct these meetings and are done in about an hour.
